February 2020 Athlete of the Month

Christy Martinez

How many different programs within Alamo 180 have you done?

  • Beginner Freestyle Swim Series
  • Better Freestyle Swim Series
  • Rookie To Race (Beginner Triathlon)
  • How to do flip turns and wall touches Swim Clinic
  • CrossFit

Why do you CrossFit?

My motive to finally do CrossFit is because I signed up for a Deca Challenge for the Texas Senior Games and two events I needed help with: Pull-ups and Power Cleans. You-Tube was not cutting it, especially for the Power Cleans.

What is your favorite workout? Least favorite?

  • My favorite workout is anything that I can do and do well.
  • My least favorite is anything that I suck at.

What is something people don’t know about you?

I joined the Army at 17, 3 weeks after graduating from high school. I only joined for the College Fund but 22 years later, I retired. I joined as Private Benjamin and retired a Sergeant Major so I will say that leaders are made. I never saw myself staying in the Army longer than 3 years.

Hobbies outside of fitness?

I love Gardening and have 9 beds that always have something growing. I am also a Texas Master Naturalist so I spend a lot of time on trail maintenance, butterfly surveys or anything outdoors.

What are you training for right now?

There are so many great events and it is so easy to want to do them all. Last year, I signed up for way too many and by the end of the summer, I was wiped out. This year, I am focusing on the Texas Senior Games. I have signed up for 4 events.

  • 20K Cycling which will be the first time I raced in a bike only event
  • 5k Run
  • Deca Challenge consisting of Power Clean, Push-up, Pull-up, Kneeling Ball Toss, Vertical Jump and Plank and then some sprinting events: 100m, 400m, and 1500m
  • Triathlon which will be the Tri for Old Glory in July

And I am also preparing for my first CrossFit competition and it has the word massacre in it.

Favorite cheat meal?

I eat pretty clean because I eat whatever my garden gives me plus a protein. I believe everything in moderation.  I have a no-cook on Friday policy which means a Hot and Ready from Little Caesar’s will do. I like ice-cream and if I am going to eat it, it will be full fat with several goodies in it Like Double cookie crumble with caramel, chocolate covered nuts, and swirls of chocolate.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out with CrossFit?

Stick with it. There are alternates to every exercise so that you can get something out of it.

December 2019 Athlete of the Month

December 2019 Athlete of the Month.

Heather Hamilton

How old are you and when did you join Alamo 180?

I’m 38 and joined Alamo 180 about two years ago (maybe, I have no idea ;).

How many different programs within Alamo 180 have you done?

I CrossFit three times a week and recently participated in the beginner swim series twice (because I’m a “beginner-beginner” and sink in the water).

Why do you CrossFit?  Favorite workout? Least favorite?

I love to lift weights! Even in middle school, I would choose weightlifting over everything else. I enjoy running, and lifting helps with that, but I enjoy lifting weights more. My favorite workouts are deadlifts and squat cleans! The two moves make me feel strong and powerful. My least favorite workouts involve anything upper body and sprints. You guessed it, they don’t make me feel strong.

What are you training for right now?

Currently, I’m training for the Houston half marathon. I plan on pushing myself and set a pretty lofty goal so I’ll be serious and train for real this time. Normally I just run for running and train for life. I often consider myself a lazy runner just out there to enjoy it and not hit a time or pace.

Favorite cheat meal?

I love to eat, and I really love GOOD food. I often joke with my boyfriend that food is the stable of our relationship. He’s an amazing cook and I love to eat – it’s perfect! I don’t have a cheat meal as I don’t restrict myself from food but rather enjoy the not so good for you items in moderation and don’t really enjoy junk food. But my favorite meal would be any breakfast item.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out with CrossFit?

The best advice I could provide to anyone starting CrossFit would be to believe in yourself and pay attention to your body. Don’t compare yourself to anyone else other than yourself. It doesn’t matter that the person next to you is lifting twice as much as you, you are on your own path. Listen to your body and take a rest when you need it. And most importantly, love who you are.

November 2019 Athlete of the Month

How old are you and when did you join Alamo 180?

I’m 29 years old. I joined Alamo 180 in June 2016. Wandering into Alamo 180 3+ years ago was one of the best choices I’ve made.

How many different programs within Alamo 180 have you done?

I’ve done all of them! Initially, I intended to join the triathlon team, but I got talked into doing a summer CrossFit challenge.  I moved over to the running team, then to triathlon for a year. I’ve also trained with the OCR team and did yoga when it was offered!

Why do you CrossFit?

At first, I did CrossFit because it made me a better runner. But now, I do it because it makes me a better person. I struggle with anxiety and am a perfectionist but CrossFit challenges me to learn new skills and push my limits.  It keeps me strong – mentally and physically.

What is your favorite workout? Least favorite?

If a workout involves rope climbs, tire flips, and sled pushes – I’m there! My least favorite workouts are when they’re called assessments.  It doesn’t matter if it’s the same workout I’ve done in classes before, but as soon as it’s called an assessment and I get in my own head. I never regret finishing one but getting myself there is always a battle.

Favorite lift?

I LOVE hang and power cleans! They make me feel like a badass.

What are you training for right now?

I had planned on doing the Houston Marathon but I’ve been having some knee pain since running the Sky Island 50K. I’m primarily a runner but I’m taking some time away from always training for the next race. I’ve been having fun lifting and finally being able to do an unassisted pull-up!

Favorite cheat meal?

I don’t consider any meal a ‘cheat meal!’ I’ve been in recovery from anorexia and bulimia for five years now and I don’t consider any foods off-limits. After years of restricting or bingeing, I do my best to eat intuitively.  Sometimes, I finish a long run and can’t wait for an acai bowl. Other times, all I want is a juicy cheeseburger, fries, and beer. I make it a priority to listen to what my body needs each day and then trust it.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out with CrossFit?

Have FUN! Don’t compare yourself to others, and focus on form first. Some days, you’ll question why your alarm is going off at 4:55 AM and just go back to sleep (or at least I do).  But that’s okay if you’re having fun – the fun will make sure you come back the next day. The welcoming community at Alamo 180 and the challenging workouts keep me coming back consistently, and it’s that consistency that I’ve built physical skills and mental strength!

October Athlete of the Month

Frank Aguirre

October 2019 Athlete of the Month

How old are you and when did you join Alamo 180? I am 54. I joined A180 in September 2016.

How much weight have you lost? 70 pounds

Why do you CrossFit? I CrossFit to stay mentally and physically healthy. I also enjoy working out with like-minded people who also want to have fun getting healthy.

What is your favorite workout? Least favorite? My favorite is Murph; it such a huge challenge. My least favorite workout is anything with running.

Favorite lift? My favorite lifts are Hang and Power cleans.

What are you training for right now? Ironically, I am training for the Rock-n-Roll half marathon, in December!

What has been the most important thing for you in terms of keeping the weight off? The most important thing has been consistency. Consistency in the gym, the kitchen, sleep, hydration, and all the extras that help me stay lean like my Sunday morning 6-mile walks.

Favorite cheat meal? Cheeseburgers. Cheeseburgers. Cheeseburgers.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out with CrossFit or strength training? Be patient, be consistent. Show up on frequently and be ready to put in some work. Concentrate on form first then weight. I think it’s better to build your engine slowly than to go out too heavy, too hard, or too fast.
