Gym closed for a week

Out of the safety and well-being of our members, the Alamo 180 gym will be closed for a week (3/16-3/22) #flattenthecurve

If you are a member, we will be loading workouts you can complete at home onto the SugarWOD app that will require little to no equipment. Be sure to check your app daily for the Coronapocolypse workouts.

If you don’t have the app, it’s free! Make sure to download it and search for Alamo 180.

For those that take swim classes, the SAC pool will be closed as well this week. We will keep you posted as we hear more from the college.

No more triathlon

A message from Alamo 180 Founders, Jeff and Bree,

Since 2011, Alamo 180 has helped hundreds of athletes enjoy and excel in the sport of triathlon, a sport that is near and dear to our hearts. It’s literally how we met. Our courtship consisted of swimming, cycling, running and lifting weights.

After a lot of research and consideration, as well as our experiences as both coaches and athletes, we are making a pivot in the triathlon training services we offer.

We are shifting our focus to what we believe most triathletes need most – CrossFit, swimming and nutrition. We will have triathlon training plans for sale, but we are no longer offering triathlon coaching or a triathlon club. This change will allow us the opportunity to better serve the triathlon community instead of just Alamo 180 triathletes.

You’re invited to try a CrossFit class so you can see what’s in the koolaid and maybe start drinking it yourself. Understand why so many athletes have started getting faster in their training and racing, by simply adding 2 CrossFit workouts a week.

“I’m the fittest I’ve ever been because of Alamo 180’s CrossFit classes! I also BQ’d my marathon and had several podium finishes in triathlon last season, so the proof is in da pudding!”

We invite you to sign up for a swim series if you want to learn how to swim or to improve your freestyle. We also have a series to help you build skill and confidence in the open water. These series have helped so many triathletes improve in their training and race performances.

“I would highly recommend the Beginner Freestyle Swim Series to anyone who wants to learn freestyle. The breakdown of how to swim is presented in an easy to understand manner and the amount of information presented in each session is appropriate and worked in my brain. I felt comfortable, learned techniques that would never have occurred to me before and am ready to move on to the next series to build upon and improve my swim.”

We will continue offering our popular Tuesday evening swim classes and open swim. We will still be out at Boerne Lake every Saturday morning at 7:30am starting April 4, so make sure to join us there!

We are looking forward to a great 2020 and beyond serving you through CrossFit, swimming and nutrition!

Respectfully,
Jeff and Bree Soileau

Alamo 180 Athlete of the Month: Manny Iruegas

How old are you and when did you join Alamo 180?I am 28 years old and I joined Alamo 180 around June 2019.

Why do you CrossFit? For the Gainzz haha!! More importantly, I do CrossFit to be the healthiest I can be and keep an overall physically active lifestyle.

What is your favorite workout? Least favorite? My favorite workouts are the high intensity, all or nothing workouts. I really enjoy the support i get from my coaches and the class energy. My least favorite workouts are when I have to workout alone without the motivation from others.

What is something people don’t know about you?I’ve been employed at USAA for 3 years. I currently work in the bank department, specifically dealing with military benefits and the service member civil relief act. Every day is a new learning experience and I really enjoy my time there.

Hobbies outside of fitness? My favorite hobby is playing drums. I’ve been a drummer for 15+ years. I love dropping some sick beats!

What are you training for right now? Another competition! I participated in my first Crossfit competition about a month ago and I had a blast! Aside from that, I’m training to beat Coach Xamara in double unders..

Favorite cheat meal?
I loveeee desserts and pizza! My go to desserts would either be cookies or brownies and for pizza the meat trio is my favorite. Is beer a meal?

What advice would you give to someone just starting out with CrossFit?The first days are honestly the hardest and the easiest time to give up. Consistency is one of the biggest keys to accomplishment. Eventually, CrossFit becomes addicting and a great habit! You will amaze yourself!

How many different programs within Alamo 180 have you done?

  • Beginner Freestyle Swim Series
  • Better Freestyle Swim Series
  • Rookie To Race (Beginner Triathlon)
  • How to do flip turns and wall touches Swim Clinic
  • CrossFit

Why do you CrossFit?

My motive to finally do CrossFit is because I signed up for a Deca Challenge for the Texas Senior Games and two events I needed help with: Pull-ups and Power Cleans. You-Tube was not cutting it, especially for the Power Cleans.

What is your favorite workout? Least favorite?

  • My favorite workout is anything that I can do and do well.
  • My least favorite is anything that I suck at.

What is something people don’t know about you?

I joined the Army at 17, 3 weeks after graduating from high school. I only joined for the College Fund but 22 years later, I retired. I joined as Private Benjamin and retired a Sergeant Major so I will say that leaders are made. I never saw myself staying in the Army longer than 3 years.

Hobbies outside of fitness?

I love Gardening and have 9 beds that always have something growing. I am also a Texas Master Naturalist so I spend a lot of time on trail maintenance, butterfly surveys or anything outdoors.

What are you training for right now?

There are so many great events and it is so easy to want to do them all. Last year, I signed up for way too many and by the end of the summer, I was wiped out. This year, I am focusing on the Texas Senior Games. I have signed up for 4 events.

  • 20K Cycling which will be the first time I raced in a bike only event
  • 5k Run
  • Deca Challenge consisting of Power Clean, Push-up, Pull-up, Kneeling Ball Toss, Vertical Jump and Plank and then some sprinting events: 100m, 400m, and 1500m
  • Triathlon which will be the Tri for Old Glory in July

And I am also preparing for my first CrossFit competition and it has the word massacre in it.

Favorite cheat meal?

I eat pretty clean because I eat whatever my garden gives me plus a protein. I believe everything in moderation.  I have a no-cook on Friday policy which means a Hot and Ready from Little Caesar’s will do. I like ice-cream and if I am going to eat it, it will be full fat with several goodies in it Like Double cookie crumble with caramel, chocolate covered nuts, and swirls of chocolate.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out with CrossFit?

Stick with it. There are alternates to every exercise so that you can get something out of it.

December 2019 Athlete of the Month

December 2019 Athlete of the Month.

Heather Hamilton

How old are you and when did you join Alamo 180?

I’m 38 and joined Alamo 180 about two years ago (maybe, I have no idea ;).

How many different programs within Alamo 180 have you done?

I CrossFit three times a week and recently participated in the beginner swim series twice (because I’m a “beginner-beginner” and sink in the water).

Why do you CrossFit?  Favorite workout? Least favorite?

I love to lift weights! Even in middle school, I would choose weightlifting over everything else. I enjoy running, and lifting helps with that, but I enjoy lifting weights more. My favorite workouts are deadlifts and squat cleans! The two moves make me feel strong and powerful. My least favorite workouts involve anything upper body and sprints. You guessed it, they don’t make me feel strong.

What are you training for right now?

Currently, I’m training for the Houston half marathon. I plan on pushing myself and set a pretty lofty goal so I’ll be serious and train for real this time. Normally I just run for running and train for life. I often consider myself a lazy runner just out there to enjoy it and not hit a time or pace.

Favorite cheat meal?

I love to eat, and I really love GOOD food. I often joke with my boyfriend that food is the stable of our relationship. He’s an amazing cook and I love to eat – it’s perfect! I don’t have a cheat meal as I don’t restrict myself from food but rather enjoy the not so good for you items in moderation and don’t really enjoy junk food. But my favorite meal would be any breakfast item.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out with CrossFit?

The best advice I could provide to anyone starting CrossFit would be to believe in yourself and pay attention to your body. Don’t compare yourself to anyone else other than yourself. It doesn’t matter that the person next to you is lifting twice as much as you, you are on your own path. Listen to your body and take a rest when you need it. And most importantly, love who you are.
