Basic Beginner Series: Strength Training

The Basic Beginner Series is a 3-week class series designed to provide a foundation on which to build your strength training practice. We’ll cover the basics of how to properly utilize your breath, find correct alignment, successfully lift and move weight, and how to properly and effectively modify common weight training exercises.

If you have been wanting to incorporate strength training into your fitness regimen, and/or want to make sure you’re doing the movements correctly, then this clinic is for you! Learn the ‘WHY” and “HOW” during the Basic Beginners Series: Weight Training. Strength train with confidence!

Investment: $99 (must purchase as series). Included in your clinic purchase is a FREE one month Alamo 180 Open Gym membership.

In order to achieve mastery, you have to pratice the movements and skills regularly. Practice what you learn in each class at your own convenience during our Open Gym Hours.

Mock Triathlon

Location: Hinman Island Park
Start Time: 7:30am

We used to host these out at Boerne Lake but they made it clear they don’t like triathlon events out there. But no worries, you can still get in a practice triathlon workout! Join us on April 2 at Hinman Island Park and put all three disciplines together.

SWIM: Pick your distance (0.25, 0.5, or 1 mile) in the open water of the Comal River. It’s a consistent 68 degrees. You can wear a wetsuit, or you can go without.

BIKE: Get in a high quality, 40 minutes of challenging speed intervals on your road or tri bike mounted on a trainer. This ensures you hop on your bike quickly immediately following the swim. This unique set up eliminates the delay of taking your bike out of your trunk, putting away your swim things, and getting ready to ride. It’s safer, too! *bring your bike trainer.

RUN: Hop off the bike, put on run shoes and go! Run will consist of 20 minutes at race pace effort.

We will be monitoring your bikes at the park. We will have several coaches “on deck” to ensure your safety during each discipline.

OPEN to ANYONE that wants to join us! It’s super fun and a great way to get prepared for your upcoming triathlon event!

Parking: you can park at either Hinman Island Park, or at Prince Solms park (if Hinman Island is full).

Arrive early. It takes longer than you would think to set up.

Bathrooms are available in the park.

Bike Rodeo Clinic

Alamo 180 Bike Rodeo Clinic

In this TWO SESSION bike clinic, you will learn:
*bike anatomy
*gears & shifting
*skills and drills to improve your bike handling
*knowledge of cadence to get the most out of each pedal stroke
*group riding ins and outs
*hill riding: how to most effectively and efficiently ascend and descend.

This clinic is for novice and experienced cyclists.

2 coaches wil be presenting this two session clinic.

Part 1 (Sun, Mar 13) @ 10am (2 hours duration)
A. Class Instruction: bike anatomy, skills & drills, rules of the road, group riding rules
B. Practical Instruction: bike rodeo, group road ride

Part 2: (Sun, Mar 20) @ 10am (2.5 hours duration) 
A. Class Instruction: gears & shifting
B. Practical Instruction: group road ride – hills (ascents & descents)

Investment:
BOTH: Part 1 & Part 2: $89/A180 mbrs; $99 for non-A180 mbrs

Swim Clinic

Alamo 180 Swim Clinic
Are you tired of spending hours in the pool and not seeing the benefits. Have you increased your amount of time in the pool each week only to see a second or two improvement? Is the water your “enemy” and you beat it into submission with each lap you take? Do your hips and legs drag through the water, but you can’t figure out how to make them horizontal? Do you have problems breathing? Do you often swim off course in the open water? Do you swim flat?    If you answered YES to any of these questions, then this Swim Clinic is for you!
 
Topics Covered:
  • Horizontal Body Positioning: Learn how to keep your hips up and level, butt up, chest down, head down, and heels up. 
  • Rotation: Learn how to appropriately rotate your body from side to side, all while keeping your hips and legs up.
  • Underwater Pull: Learn how to roll the shoulder appropriately so your elbows stay high in the underwater catch and pull phase. Learn to get that last, strong push out of each stroke.
There will be several coaches on deck for this clinic.
 
This swim clinic will also include some of Bree’s finest, stick figure drawings! Images that will “stick” with you. They can’t be unseen! 😉
 
At the completion of the first clinic, you will receive “homework” that is to be completed between the two swim sessions. These will be on your own swim workouts and dryland exercises. These will help to reinforce what was covered during the first session.
 
At the completion of both sessions, you will receive a progress report. The progress report will outline what areas you need to work on and which drills are necessary for your success in swimming.
 
Swimming is a skill-based sport. It takes time to develop the skills necessary to be successful in the water. Our best advice to give you is to NEVER stop learning. Don’t just practice and guess at what you need to fix. Practice with a skilled coach telling you exactly what you need to do in order to be successful. This clinic is designed to help you think about swimming in a whole new way and to break down the stroke into manageable chunks so you can focus on each aspect and become the swimmer you have always wanted to be.

About Coach Bree:
Bree got started in endurance sports as a competitive swimmer in middle and high school. She also swam in college, trying to cleverly squeeze it in while simultaneously competing in cross-country and track. As an athlete, Bree honed her skills in the water by attending swim clinics and camps led by nationally ranked coaches. In her early coaching days, she became a swim instructor teaching youth how to swim. After a year of that, she started to teach adults. For 5 years, Bree has led weekly triathlon swim workouts as well as conducted private sessions to all levels of athletes – beginners with no experience to advanced swimmers looking to fine tune their stroke. It’s not uncommon for a beginner and/or intermediate swimmer to drop 5 to 10 seconds off their 100 yard time, after a session or two, just from a few tweaks to their strokes. It’s witnessed all the time at Alamo 180. Efficiency equates to speed. You can gain free speed in the water, just learn how to harness it! And a skilled coach can teach you how! Burpee Challenge: Jan 18 – Jan 30

Get ready! Two week Burpee Challenge from Jan 18 – Jan 30.

How to participate: In 10 minutes, perform as many burpees as possible. At the end of two weeks, the person with the most burpees, wins. All burpees must be performed in the gym.

All levels welcomed to participate. Challenge yourself. It’s about you, burpees and the clock. And if you want to get a little competitive, enjoy some friendly competition.

In other gyms, you have to work out quietly or prepare for strange looks from everyone else. In our Open Gym, grunting is not only allowed, it’s encouraged. If you lift with our bumper plates, drop weight when you need to, no one’s going to yell at you or threaten to kick you out. No shirt, no shoes, no problem!

Rates: $30/month (6 month contract + a $10 initial join fee)

Frosty Five: 5k, 5mi, 1mi Fun Run

Alamo 180 presents our THIRD annual, FREE*, Frosty Five: 5k / 5mi Costume Run! No frills, just lots of fun! Come dressed in your holiday spirit!

*Suggested to contribute a donation to the Street 2 Feet non-profit.

COURSE DETAILS:
Your choice!! A 5k Run/Walk -or- 5 mile Run/Walk – or- 1 mile Run/Walk
All distances are out and back routes through Olmos Park. Turnaround points will be marked with signs on the route. Each corner will be marked with chalk arrows.
The course WILL NOT be closed to traffic. Please use consideration when crossing streets. But we don’t expect there to be much traffic on Christmas Eve morning 🙂 There isn’t much on a regular morning anyway!
