November 2019 Athlete of the Month

How old are you and when did you join Alamo 180? 

I’m 29 years old. I joined Alamo 180 in June 2016. Wandering into Alamo 180 3+ years ago was one of the best choices I’ve made.

How many different programs within Alamo 180 have you done?  

I’ve done all of them! Initially, I intended to join the triathlon team, but I got talked into doing a summer CrossFit challenge.  I moved over to the running team, then to triathlon for a year. I’ve also trained with the OCR team and did yoga when it was offered!   

Why do you CrossFit? 

At first, I did CrossFit because it made me a better runner. But now, I do it because it makes me a better person. I struggle with anxiety and am a perfectionist but CrossFit challenges me to learn new skills and push my limits.  It keeps me strong – mentally and physically.

What is your favorite workout? Least favorite?

If a workout involves rope climbs, tire flips, and sled pushes – I’m there! My least favorite workouts are when they’re called assessments.  It doesn’t matter if it’s the same workout I’ve done in classes before, but as soon as it’s called an assessment and I get in my own head. I never regret finishing one but getting myself there is always a battle. 

Favorite lift? 

I LOVE hang and power cleans! They make me feel like a badass. 

What are you training for right now? 

I had planned on doing the Houston Marathon but I’ve been having some knee pain since running the Sky Island 50K. I’m primarily a runner but I’m taking some time away from always training for the next race. I’ve been having fun lifting and finally being able to do an unassisted pull-up! 

Favorite cheat meal? 

I don’t consider any meal a ‘cheat meal!’ I’ve been in recovery from anorexia and bulimia for five years now and I don’t consider any foods off-limits. After years of restricting or bingeing, I do my best to eat intuitively.  Sometimes, I finish a long run and can’t wait for an acai bowl. Other times, all I want is a juicy cheeseburger, fries, and beer. I make it a priority to listen to what my body needs each day and then trust it. 

What advice would you give to someone just starting out with CrossFit?

Have FUN! Don’t compare yourself to others, and focus on form first. Some days, you’ll question why your alarm is going off at 4:55 AM and just go back to sleep (or at least I do).  But that’s okay if you’re having fun – the fun will make sure you come back the next day. The welcoming community at Alamo 180 and the challenging workouts keep me coming back consistently, and it’s that consistency that I’ve built physical skills and mental strength!
